McNair Summer Research Scholarship

Provides an eight-week research opportunity each summer. Research scholars spend June and July at the University of Rochester conducting reserach under the guidance of a faculty mentor in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, English, environmental sciences, health and society, history, mathematics, physics, political science, or psychology. Students attend workshops designed to help them prepare for graduate study. In the final week of the program, students present the results of their research projects at a special conference attended by mentors, colleagues, and other students.

Must be a sophomore or a junior; gpa 84 and above; US citizenship or permanent resident; must be either a low-income, first-generation college student, or a member of one of the following underrepresented groups: African American, Hispanic, or Native American.


Two months, June and July.

Each participant receives a $2,400 stipend, free room and board, and travel expenses up to $325. The McNair Program also funds participant travel to prospective graduate programs and to present research at various national McNair and professional conferences.


Candidates are interviewed by the on-campus faculty fellowhships committee for nomination and endorsement. Applicants invited for interviews by the Mitchell selection committee will travel to Washington, DC.
