Frederic Neil Houtenbrink

Frederic Neil Houtenbrink '56

Feb. 8, 1934-Aug. 13, 2018

Frederic Neil Houtenbrink ’56, a flooring company owner of Waterloo, N.Y., was born on Feb. 8, 1934, in Freehold, N.J., the son of the former Hilda Price, a nurse, and Ferdinand Houtenbrink, a contractor. He graduated from Waterloo High School.

A history and English literature major, Houtenbrink was very active on College Hill as a member of the football team, Block “H” Club, International Relations Club, Hispanic Relations Club, Foreign Films Society, Nous Onze, and Delta Upsilon.

For his 50th reunion yearbook, he reminisced on Hamilton’s impact on his life with this succinct reflection: “I learned a bit about humility.”

After graduation, Houtenbrink took a job with General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., and then served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He returned from the service to work as a partner at Houtenbrink Flooring, the family business. He eventually took ownership in 1966 and retired in 2014. He was a member of the American Legion Warner Van Riper Post 435 and once noted that reading and travel were favorite pastimes.

Frederic N. Houtenbrink died on August 13, 2018. He was 84 years old. Predeceased by his wife, the former Judith Archambo in 2016, Houtenbrink is survived by a daughter, two sons, and five grandchildren.
