Donald Frederick Miller '54

Donald Frederick Miller ’54, a travel agency owner of Lakewood, Ohio, was born on Nov. 7, 1932, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of the former ViVera Miller and Frederick Miller. He graduated from Dunkirk High School.

At Hamilton, Miller majored in English literature and economics and was a member of Psi Upsilon. He lent his athletic talents to the football team, where he earned four letters.

Following graduation, Miller served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957 as a telegraphic typewriter operator stationed in Honolulu. He began his business career working for Pan American World Airways and purchased what became the Lakewood Travel Bureau in 1972, where he continued to work five days a week alongside his second wife, Robin, and daughter Linda until shortly before his death. A published obituary noted that Miller had never considered the idea of retiring: “I go to work every day selling happiness and memories. Why would I ever stop?”

For his 50th reunion yearbook, Miller recounted his own years of wanderlust. “Pastimes include travel, golf, and cooking. Usually take three or four trips a year. Favorite destination: The Big Island of Hawaii. Our favorite mode of travel is cruise ships — 37 cruises so far. Most spectacular trips were to China and Kenya.”

Donald F. Miller died on Oct. 4, 2018. He was 85 years old. In addition to his wife of 35 years, he is survived by two daughters, a son, and three grandchildren. He wed his first wife, the former June Stearns, in 1959.
