Because Hamilton Remembers
Harold Jewell Conger '31
Dec. 28, 1909-Dec. 31, 1931
Harold Jewell Conger ’31, a retired regional administrator for the U.S. Department of Labor, was born on December 28, 1909, to William P., a salesman, and Jessamine Lee Conger, a chiropractor, in Oklahoma City, OK. Reared by his mother in Utica, NY, following his father’s death, Hal Conger came to Hamilton in 1927 from Utica Free Academy. He joined Alpha Delta Phi and went out for a variety of athletics, earning a letter in football. He also served as collection manager of the Royal Gaboon and business manager of the Hamilton Literary Magazine. Elected to the journalism honorary Pi Delta Epsilon, he was graduated in 1931.
Little is known of Harold Conger’s subsequent activities except that he was long employed in government service. He became a recruitment and placement specialist with the Office of Economic Opportunity and was for a time with the Job Corps in the mid-Atlantic region. While located in Kentucky in 1966, he earned an M.Ed. degree from the University of Louisville. He retired as deputy director of the Job Corps program in the Philadelphia region.
Harold J. Conger was residing in Kentucky when he died on April 9, 1998, according to verification obtained by the College. Information on survivors is lacking, but he was married to Lera H. Dixon on December 31, 1931, in Louisville, and they had three sons, William L., Richard B., and Stephen L. Conger.
