Charles Morton Gluck

Charles Morton Gluck '53

Oct. 11, 1931-Jul. 12, 2018

Charles Morton Gluck ’53, a physician of South Burlington, Vt., was born on Oct. 11, 1931, in New York City, the son of the former Lucena McManus and Charles Gluck, a pharmacist. Raised in Rochester, N.Y., he graduated from West High School in 1949.

On College Hill Gluck was a member of the men’s soccer team, Biology Club, and Delta Upsilon. For his 50th reunion yearbook, he recalled that “The opportunity for dedication and serious studies set a pattern for me through medical school and a lifetime practice of medicine. The value of a broad education has remained with me, surfacing again in my retirement after years of very focused medical practice.”

Gluck earned his medical degree from Boston University in 1957 and after completing his internal medicine residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he joined the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon. At the end of four years of military service in 1962, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. He also pursued a National Institute of Health Fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology at the University of Vermont Medical Center before entering into private practice.

In 1970, Gluck collaborated with colleagues to open the Aesculapius Medical Center, the first independent multi-specialty medical practice in South Burlington. He
also spent nearly 20 years practicing internal medicine in Rockport, Maine. After retiring, he provided short-term coverage for internists throughout the United States.

Gluck also worked in developing countries and in rural areas of the U.S. He served as medical director for Project HOPE in Tunisia and as president/CEO of Health Systems Research Institute, a nonprofit developer of health centers. He also participated in a volunteer medical mission in Nicaragua.

He loved nature, music, flying, and travel, according to a published obituary. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, with whom he camped, hiked, skied, sketched, golfed, and canoed.

Charles M. Gluck died on July 12, 2018, at the Vermont Respite House in Colchester. He was 86. He is survived his wife of 38 years, the former Darrilyn Peters, five children, four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Virginia Clarke.
