Because Hamilton Remembers
Kenneth Steven Cohen '70
Sep. 9, 1948-Feb. 11, 2015
Kenneth Steven Cohen ’70, a rabbi of Forest Hills, N.Y., and York, Pa., was born on Sept. 9, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of Myrtle and Paul Cohen, a tool-and-die maker. He graduated from Farmingdale (N.Y.) Senior High School.
Cohen graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Hamilton and studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and in the Ph.D. program in religion at Temple University in Philadelphia.
In a tribute to notable Hamilton faculty in 2008, Cohen, who was an English major, noted that Professor Ivan Marki changed his life at an advisory meeting. The professor, Cohen said, steered him away from pursuing work in academia before seeking alternatives. “I soon came to realize that he was absolutely correct. It would be a cop-out to stay in the womb of college life. It was time to go forth and have new experiences,” he wrote. “And so I went to Israel for my junior year, and my life changed. It turns out that I wound up being a teacher after all, because that is what a rabbi is. I am indebted to Mr. Marki for opening my eyes to a world beyond the campus.”
At the time of his death, Cohen served as rabbi at Ohev Sholom Congregation in York.
Kenneth S. Cohen died on Feb. 11, 2015. He was 66 years old and is survived by his wife, the former Hedvah Campeas, and three sons.
