David Emerich George '53

Aug. 31, 1931-Feb. 14, 2022

David Emerich George ’53 died in Macon, Ga., on Feb. 14, 2022. Born in Watertown, N.Y., on Aug. 31, 1931, he grew up in nearby Chaumont and came to Hamilton from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. Dave left the College for military service during the height of the Korean War. He joined the Air Force in December 1950, during his sophomore year, and was discharged in August 1954 at the rank of airman first class and with a Good Conduct Medal.

In November 1955, he married Margaret D. Staub. While Dave finished his studies, they lived in North Village, the residential community the College constructed for returning veterans and their families. Dave was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and majored in economics and psychology. He graduated with the Class of 1956 but always maintained his allegiance to the Class of 1953.

Dave and Peggy had three sons and a daughter. After Hamilton, he made a career in sales, beginning at Revere Copper & Brass, Inc., in Cincinnati. He then became a sales representative for the J.M. Huber Corp., first in Batavia, N.Y., and then in Macon, Ga., where he made his home until 2000. During this period, he was regional sales manager for the paper division of the company and later manager of field sales for the clay division. When he retired in 1990, he was director of domestic and international sales and service.

Dave’s marriage to Peggy dissolved and he subsequently married Orieta Taylor. In retirement, they purchased a 39' Mainship Trawler boat and traveled along the Intracoastal Waterway, Florida Keys, and Bahamas. Sailing was not his only passion; he held lifelong interests in skiing, tennis, golf, and pingpong. In 2000, Dave and Orieta left Macon and returned to Chaumont, his boyhood home.

David E. George is survived by his wife, four children, seven grandchildren, and Sally George Boulter ’87, his first cousin once removed. He is predeceased by his father, Wendell D. George, Class of 1922, his uncle H. Louis George, Class of 1923, and his cousins Henry L. George, Class of 1952, P’87, and William G. George ’58
