Donald Bruce Dolan '50

Jul. 28, 1928-Sep. 12, 2018

Donald Bruce Dolan ’50, a dentist and orthodontist of Bradenton, Fla., was born on July 28, 1928, in Syracuse, N.Y., son of the former Edna Mae Wilson and William Dolan, a medical doctor. Growing up on Skaneateles Lake, N.Y., he excelled at competitive sailing. He graduated from Skaneateles High School.

At Hamilton, Dolan was a member of Chi Psi and the men’s hockey and lacrosse teams. Upon graduation with a degree in biology, he continued his study of the subject for an additional year at Syracuse University before attending the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a D.D.S. in 1955 and an M.D.S. in 1967.

For his 40th reunion yearbook, Dolan remarked that “Hamilton afforded me exposure to not only high academics but high moral values through the Honor Code. It adequately prepared me for future academic experience.”

Dolan achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1955 to 1957 as a dentist stationed in Japan. He returned to the States and began practicing dentistry and then orthodontics, beginning in 1967, in Lakeland, Fla.

After moving to Anna Maria Island, Fla., Dolan joined the Roser Memorial Community Church and volunteered at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota. He enjoyed reading nonfiction and listening to music from the Big Band era, according to a published obituary, and encouraged his daughters’ musical interests and education.

Donald B. Dolan died on Sept. 12, 2018, at the age of 90. He is survived by three daughters, four grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. A marriage to the former JoAnn Jordan, whom he had wed in 1964, had ended in divorce.
