Theodore T. Johnson '90

Sep. 28, 1967-Jul. 30, 2020

A devoted father and passionate environmentalist who loved fishing with his son, Theodore T. Johnson ’90 spent as much time as he could at his summer cabin on Lake Washburn in Outing, Minn.

The cabin was the place that brought him great joy and happiness, his family said in a published obituary. It’s where Johnson, of Edina, Minn., died on July 30, 2020.

The youngest of six children, Johnson was born on Sept. 28, 1967, in Minneapolis, the son of Robert and Geraldine Johnson. He attended Shattuck St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., before matriculating at Hamilton.

On the Hill, Johnson focused his studies on German and political science. He ran on the track and cross country teams. For a portion of his junior and senior years, he served as editor of The Spectator, where he began working his first year of College. He also was a member of the publications board and the steering committee of the Adler Conference.

Johnson very much enjoyed his years at Hamilton, and as an alumnus who lived abroad for some years, he was willing to interview prospective Hamilton students in Europe.

After earning a master’s degree in accounting and business from the University of Hartford in 1991, Johnson built a career as a certified public accountant and corporate comptroller. He lived and worked in Germany, Austria, London, and Sweden, and fluently spoke Swedish, German, and Spanish.

Above all, Johnson devoted himself to his son, loving the time he spent with him at soccer games, school activities, and, according to his published obituary, “teaching him the fine art of fileting a walleye or northern pike.”

A committed environmentalist, Johnson was on the board of the Lake Washburn Association and chaired its aquatic invasive species committee. He taught lake residents how to identify the species. He scuba dived to hunt for water milfoil and built nests for loons. Johnson also made time to serve on the board of the Minnesota Lakes and Rivers Advocates, which works to preserve water resources for future generations.

Johnson’s survivors include his son and his siblings. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother.
