Anthony Rein Kuolt

Anthony Rein Kuolt '46

Oct. 1, 1924-Sep. 4, 2018

Anthony Rein Kuolt ’46, a sports coach, college administrator, and banker of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Wyckoff, N.J., was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Rochester, N.Y., the son of the former Marietta Crounse and Oscar Kuolt, Class of 1907, a social worker. He graduated from The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., in 1942.

At Hamilton, he was a member of Psi Upsilon, Biology Club, the Interfraternity Council, and Student Council. He was a member of the basketball team and coached basketball and soccer. His college years were interrupted by World War II, when he served in the U.S Army from March 1943 to August 1944. He graduated from the College in 1948. He earned a master’s in education from Rutgers University in 1955.

Recalling his years at the College, Kuolt noted in his 40th reunion yearbook, “Until I returned to ‘the Hill’ in 1969 for the program Hamilton Horizons, I did not realize what the College was doing educationally — teaching of critical thinking and the subject matter was the vehicle to this end. Before that I had questioned the value of the liberal education of Hamilton. It all came to focus at that point.”

Kuolt started teaching and coaching in 1952 at his alma mater, Peddie, and was hired by Rutgers University in 1957 to coach basketball, tennis, and soccer and to run the intramural sports program. In 1961, he participated in the fitness training team at Rutgers for one of the first groups of Peace Corps volunteers. He left coaching in 1962 and entered educational administration at Montclair State College, retiring from that post in 1987. He then worked as a mortgage banker in northern New Jersey.

Kuolt purchased a house in Bonita Springs in 1994, where he spent winters and became a dedicated golfer, according to a published obituary.

Anthony R. Kuolt died on Sept. 4, 2018. He was 93 years old. Kuolt is survived by his wife, the former Constance Fellows; a daughter and son; a step-daughter and step-son; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A 1949 marriage to the former Ann Goodson had ended in divorce.
