Because Hamilton Remembers
John Woodworth Burns '52
Nov. 22, 1930-Jan. 31, 2021
John Woodworth Burns ’52 died on Jan. 31, 2021, in Albany, N.Y. Born on Nov. 22, 1930, in Binghamton, N.Y., he came to Hamilton from Binghamton Central High School. On the Hill he majored in public policy and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. From his sophomore through senior years, he was a member of the International Relations Club and was a member of the Biology Club while a junior. He played intramural basketball with what was called a “poetry-in-motion style,” a description also apparently apt for his approach to waiting tables.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1955, assigned to the Army Security Agency, Pacific Area Command in Tokyo for the duration of his service. Upon his discharge, he went to work in the New York State Civil Service. Rising from trainee to director of labor relations, he worked in the Departments of Labor, Public Works, Public Services, and Correctional Services. He retired in 1991.
John W. Burns was predeceased by his wife of 40 years.
