Clarence Albert “Buddy” Griffith, Jr. '51

Dec. 25, 1928-Feb. 4, 2019

Clarence Albert “Buddy” Griffith, Jr. ’51, a grocery store retailer and property developer of Huntington, N.Y., was born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Huntington, a son of the former Irma Huxley and Clarence Griffith, a meat market retailer. He graduated from Huntington High School.

At Hamilton, Griffith was a member of lacrosse and baseball teams, Block “H” Club, the Interfraternity Council, and Chi Psi fraternity. He majored in history and economics.

The 1951 Hamiltonian remarked that Griffith’s talents as a social lion, lover, student, and athlete were duly noted, as well his being an “ubiquitous arbiter and source of fact for … disputants.” He also possessed a “proven capacity for facing legal turmoil.”

After graduation Griffith attended New York University and Hofstra University. He was the owner of the Huntington Market and developed properties in Huntington and Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., according to a published obituary. He served his community as a volunteer firefighter and commissioner of the Huntington Fire Department and as a trustee of the Huntington Rural Cemetery. He was also an avid sailor.

C. Albert Griffith died on Feb. 4, 2019, at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Diana Drohan, four sons, including Andrew Griffith ’80, one daughter, and 10 grandchildren.
