We spent a great morning looking at big piles of earth, created when the indigenous population buried it's sacred site rather than have it plundered by the fast approaching Incas. These rectangular mounds have ramps that lead up to them. They are aligned towards the surrounding volcanoes and the stone tops have shallow trenches in them which line up with the moon during the equinoxes. This all helps with crop planting, as far as we know. A fascinating place. We got to come face to face with llamas too.

This is one of the biggest of the fifteen or so mounds. The top part of the ramp has been excavated (over a hundred skulls were found) and there is a tin roof over another excavation site on the side of the mound.
