Quito

Capitol of Ecuador, about 1.5 million people. Elevation 9,300ft, which makes it a good height to begin acclimatising. First settled by the Quencha people, it became the northern capital of the Inca empire, and was where Atahualpa, the last Inca king, met the Spanish conquistador Pizzaro and came off the worse for it.
