Director of Annual Giving

The Director of Annual Giving manages the College’s efforts to raise annual support from alumni, sets overall strategies for the Annual Fund, leads and supervises a staff of seven, and manages a portfolio of leadership level and major gift prospects. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, s/he serves as a member of the C&D leadership. The ideal candidate will be able to articulate the mission and aspirations of Hamilton College and the value of a liberal arts education.
Staff management:

  • Oversees, directs and mentors a staff of seven professional staff and a large cadre of fund (500+) raising volunteers.
  • Provides strategic direction, charts the course, and provide assessment to all Annual Fund programs.

Volunteer and class management:

  • Staffs, leads and deploys the volunteer chair and vice-chair of Annual Giving.
  • Help to shape strategies and design the substance of programs that are incorporated into major campus weekend in order to attract, identify, and engage alumni volunteers and Annual Fund prospects in the life of the College.

Communications and solicitation strategies:

  • Sets direction and gives guidance to the development of targeted and integrated mass solicitation programs utilizing telephone, direct mail, e-mail, and web, mobile and social media for the Annual Fund.
  • Leads thorough analysis of all the programs metrics.

Direct Solicitation:

  • Makes personal solicitations of leadership level Annual Fund gifts ($1,000+).
  • Manages a portfolio of 30-40 major gift prospects in order to identify, qualify, and solicit leadership gifts to the Annual Fund and capital gifts.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, hires, train, and supervise staff in the office of Annual Giving.
  • Sets yearly goals and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Prepares a written work plan and personal goals statement prior to the start of each fiscal
  • Composes correspondence with prospective donors in a timely fashion
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate will be an energetic professional with a minimum of five to seven years of fund raising or other related experience, preferably at a higher education institution in a comprehensive campaign setting. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Key qualifications include:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in educational fundraising or equivalent industry experience;
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal abilities, including staff and program management experience;
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to independently handle multiple and varied tasks;
  • Demonstrated experience conceiving of, building and executing statistical and analytical reports and securing leadership Annual Fund gifts.

  • Work collaboratively across all college divisions and demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Build successful relationships with constituents, co-workers and donors.
  • Understands and abides by a high standard of professional ethics in order to ensure the integrity of the organization.
  • Demonstrates and maintains technical knowledge of the job and of related procedures.
  • Begins assignments without prompting, maintains productivity in both quantity and quality of work, and appropriately plans, organizes, and prioritizes work in order to maximize the use of department resources.
  • Independently contributes ideas and process improvements.
  • Makes appropriate, timely and effective decisions in order to support the work of the department.

Essential Functions

  • To effectively execute the responsibilities of this position, candidates must have:
  • Strong technology skills and familiarity with development software and applications;
  • Ability to use a variety of computer applications in his/her work
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
