Friends and family remember social worker Susan Andrea Greenwood K’77 as someone who spent her life testing social boundaries, accepting others, and leading by example. “She was true to herself, her belief in social justice, her work, and to the people she loved,” her published obituary said.

Greenwood, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., died on Aug. 16, 2020, at age 65. She was born on July 2, 1955, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Fred and Eva Greenwood. Both her parents were Holocaust survivors who fled Vienna on the Kindertransport, according to the obituary. Her family experience, it said, “informed the giving life she lived and the love she gave to others.”

After graduating from Hall High School in West Hartford, Conn., Greenwood enrolled at Kirkland College but left before completing her degree. She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1978 from the University of Connecticut. In 1982, Greenwood earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan.

A psychotherapist as well as a social worker, those who knew her say she touched many lives with her open heart, willingness to listen, and commitment to facilitate change.

Survivors include her spouse, Arnie Steward, and a son.
