Allen Robert Hallock, Jr.

Allen Robert Hallock, Jr. '55

Jul. 2, 1933-Jun. 8, 2022

Allen Robert Hallock, Jr. ’55 died in San Rafael, Calif., on June 8, 2022. Born in East Orange, N.J., on July 2, 1933, he grew up in South Orange and came to Hamilton from Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J. On the Hill, he majored in Romance languages, joined Delta Upsilon fraternity, and was a member of the Charlatans and the French Club throughout his college career and the International Relations Club as a senior. He played lacrosse in his first and final two years.

Following graduation, Allen was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent part of his tour of duty in what was then West Germany, where he encountered other Hamilton alumni and formed long-lasting friendships with several German contemporaries. It was only after he returned to New York City and began a career in business that, as he put it in his 50th reunion yearbook, he met “the most important German in my life” — Ingeborg Helene Jahn. They married in 1964 in her hometown of Essen-Werden, Germany.

Allen’s career in business began with TimeMist, a manufacturer of aerosol products. By 1966, he had worked his way up to manager of national accounts but neither he nor Ingeborg was satisfied. They took six months off and traveled in a truck camper through the West and as far south as Central America. When they left New York, they intended to return; instead they relocated to Marin County, Calif., and settled in Corte Madera, where their son and daughter were born. In 1971, they opened a printing franchise in San Rafael, Calif., which they operated successfully until they sold the business in 1996 and retired.

Allen was active in the community during this time in the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, the North Bay Advertising Club, the Redwood Club of San Rafael, and the Kiwanis Club of San Rafael, where he served as first vice president and director.

In retirement, he continued his hobby of collecting antique weapons and wrote a three-volume study of antique German target arms. The Hallocks traveled to Europe annually and spent many winters in Hawaii, while also touring the U.S. by camper van a few weeks at a time. They regularly attended performances by the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Opera; Ingeborg was a devoted fan who took courses in music and Italian to engage more fully with the latter genre.

Hamilton, Allen said, played an important part in his life. It taught him the value of high standards, perseverance, hard work, and service to others. In return, he served the College in a number of ways, volunteering on the Alumni Council, his class’s reunion gift committee, the major gifts committee, and the 175th Anniversary Campaign. He regularly contributed to the Hamilton Fund and was a Joel Bristol Associate.

Allen R. Hallock, Jr. is survived by his son and his daughter. He is predeceased by his wife as well as his father, Allen R. Hallock, Class of 1906, and his uncle Earl K. Hallock, Class of 1910.
