William Henry Aderhold, Jr. '30

Jul. 26, 1910-Mar. 4, 2002

William Henry Aderhold, Jr. ’30, a longtime sales representative for the Houghton Mifflin Co., textbook publishers, was born on July 26, 1910, to William H. and Catherine Lee Aderhold, in Troy, NY. Bill Aderhold entered the College in 1926 from Albany Academy and became a member of the local fraternity Chi Beta Sigma. Applying his athletic skills to running, he lettered in cross-country and track. He read poetry for diversion and, according to The Hamiltonian, did not “smoke, chew, or neck.” He left the Hill with his diploma in 1930.

Bill Aderhold began his working life as a teacher of English, first in Canaseraga, NY, and later in East Hampton and Northport on Long Island. He added to his credentials an M.A. degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College in 1933. Four years later, he turned from making use of textbooks to selling them for Houghton Mifflin, and at times his territory covered a large part of his native state. A onetime president of the Educational Salesmen Association of New York State, he retired in 1970.

Long a resident of Valley Stream on Long Island, Bill Aderhold had been residing in Monroe Township, NJ, in recent years. There he stayed fit into old age by “batting 100 or more golf drives a day” at a local park. Predeceased in 1998 by his wife, the former Angie E. Whitehouse, to whom he had been wed for 67 years, he continued on as his own chef, housekeeper, and gardener into his 10th decade.

William H. Aderhold, Jr., died on March 4, 2002, as recently verified by the College. Presumed survivors are a son, Norman L., and a daughter, Karen A. Aderhold.
