Thomas Joseph Chisholm '79

May. 3, 2020

Thomas Joseph Chisholm ’79, a Hamilton math major and honors student, had a highly successful career as an actuary in the insurance industry.

Chisholm, of East Greenwich, R.I., died on May 3, 2020, at home.

The son of Joseph and Carol Chisholm, he spent much of his youth in East Greenwich. When he was 9, his father, a career Marine, was transferred to Oahu, Hawaii, where the family lived for five years before returning to Rhode Island. Chisholm graduated from East Greenwich High School in 1975. At Hamilton, he joined Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

As an actuary, Chisholm passed all 10 of the exams he took over the course of his career, attaining the highest level in his field. Always in demand, he worked at a number of companies over the years, most recently as an assistant vice president and actuary at New London County Mutual Insurance Co. in Connecticut.

His family described him as an adventurous and enthusiastic traveler who visited Europe, the United Kingdom, the Virgin Islands, and just about every state in the union. He especially enjoyed trips to see his sister, who lives in Hawaii, often bringing friends with him. “He lived his life in a way that embraced others wherever he went,” his published obituary noted. “Tom often invited his newfound friends into his circle of family and friends because, in his perfect world, he wanted them to all know and love each other as he did them.’

Chisholm also loved nature and animals and was a supporter of Hearts For Animals, a nonprofit animal sanctuary and healing center founded by his sister.

Survivors include his parents and sister.
