Robert Keith Dixon '58

Aug. 8, 1936-Dec. 30, 2020

Robert “Tim” Keith Dixon ’58 died on Dec. 30, 2020, at the University of Connecticut John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, Conn. Born in Delmar, N.Y., on Aug. 8, 1936, he came to Hamilton from Bethlehem Central High School.

At Hamilton, he was a member of the Emerson Literary Society and an English major. During his time on the Hill, he was active with the Student Christian Association for four years and the Wesleyan Fellowship beginning his sophomore year. He served on the Chapel Board in his junior and senior years. It should not be surprising, therefore, to learn that upon graduating, “Tim,” as he was known, made his way first to Drew University and then to the General Theological Seminary where he earned a master of divinity in 1961. That year he was ordained an Episcopal priest and married Linda Silance. They would be married for 57 years.

Completing his education, Tim served first in the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City and subsequently as rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Passaic, N.J.

During this time, Tim was involved in social activism, participating in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, and bringing to his ministry the same level of engagement with matters of civil rights and social justice. He stepped down in 1982 and returned to Delmar to begin a second career in insurance, first as an agent and later as manager of the Adirondack Excess Insurance Co. in Glens Falls, N.Y. He retired from that position in 2005. In the early 2000s, he also served as priest-in-charge at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cohoes, N.Y.

Tim and Linda moved to Provincetown, Mass., where he became an active parishioner at St. Mary of the Harbor Episcopal Church. The couple also volunteered at Provincetown’s soup kitchen.

Known to many as thoughtful and widely read, Tim had a love of books, good food, serious conversation, laughter, and the beauty of the Adirondack mountains. He expressed pride in the education he received from Hamilton, recalling in his 50th reunion yearbook that “there were at Hamilton individuals, students, and faculty whom I enjoyed and who had great input on my thinking and way of life.”

His family will remember him as a warm, devoted, and loving husband, father, and grandfather with a great, gentle, and generous spirit.

Robert K. Dixon was predeceased by his wife. He is survived by three sons and three grandchildren.
