Spring break is a time for relaxing, catching up on sleep and taking a break from studies, but for some Hamilton College students it also means serving others.  Ten groups equaling 100 students are spending a week of their break volunteering at one of 10 nonprofit organizations through Alternative Spring Break (ASB), March 15-28.

FebFest’s annual Mr. Hamilton competition attracted a large crowd to the Annex on Feb. 11.  Mr. Football, Lashawn Russell-Ware ’17, was crowned Mr. Hamilton from a field of seven contestants.  Nearly $900 was raised at the event to benefit Alternative Spring Break.

Aaron Astor ’95, an associate professor of history at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., shared his knowledge of the Civil War in Tennessee with a group of Hamilton students volunteering at the Cumberland Trail for their Alternative Spring Break trip on March 24.

Spring break doesn’t just mean fun in the sun for all college students. One-hundred Hamilton students are spending a week of their spring break volunteering at one of 10 nonprofit organizations for Alternative Spring Break (ASB), March 16-28.

Many college students plan on spending their spring break soaking up the sun on a beach; however, 11 Hamilton students, accompanied by a faculty advisor, plan on volunteering on an organic coffee farm in Nicaragua. The trip is part of Hamilton’s Alternative Spring Break program, a student-run volunteer organization. The coffee farms they will visit—Finca Esperanza Verde or Green Hope Farm—play a large role in the community and economy of San Ramon, Nicaragua.

Hamilton’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) group in Virginia helped build a Habitat for Humanity house during the first week of spring break, March 16-23. The Hamilton students worked with Hanover Habitat for Humanity in Mechanicsville, where they helped build a house for a family in need.

While many of their counterparts hit beaches and ski slopes 102 Hamilton students are spending a week of their spring break volunteering at one of 10 nonprofit organizations for Alternative Spring Break (ASB), March 16-31.

Look at campus e-mail on any given day during Hamilton’s academic year and chances are there’s a service opportunity seeking volunteers. The people behind these numerous events are the Community Outreach and Opportunities Program (COOP) Senior Fellows – Danielle Lashley, Ramya Ramnath and Amy Soenksen. They coordinate volunteer requests with local non-profits, plan events and organize volunteers.

Although warm beaches beckon and fresh powdery slopes shout for attention, nearly 100 Hamilton students are spending a week of their spring break volunteering at one of 10 nonprofit organizations for Alternative Spring Break (ASB), March 12-23.

One hundred Hamilton students are spending a week of their spring break volunteering at nonprofit organizations during Spring Break, March 12-26. This year marks Hamilton's 18th Alternative Spring Break (ASB), an annual volunteer venture that consists of 10 different community service trips.
