Since childhood, Abby Uehling ’18 has been fascinated by tide pools and the marine invertebrates who inhabit them. Although Hamilton is a bit far from the ocean, this summer, under the guidance of Professor Simon Coppard, she is studying sea urchins in the lab.

As a first-year student applying for a summer science research spot, Nicole DeBuono ’20 told herself not to be surprised if the position went to a more senior student. But it didn’t, and she got the opportunity she was after — working with Assistant Professor of Chemistry Farah Dawood on a highly interdisciplinary project in chemistry, materials science and nanoscience.

Driven by a personal history punctuated with cancer loss, Alice Long ’20 has committed herself to learning more about and contributing to the existing knowledge on the incurable disease. “My grandfather, grandmother and a close friend all passed away from esophageal cancer, which has had a lasting effect on the way I perceive life,” said Long. She spent the summer doing cell research at Taiwan's National Tsinghua University.

After coming to the sad realization that coral, which is on the brink of global extinction, would not be an especially prudent area of marine biology to specialize in, Aaron Beguelin ’18 turned his attention to sea urchins. Urchins, which feed on coral reefs and kelp, are primary consumers, similar to cows on land, and are highly important to the eco-system, playing a crucial role in algae growth.

As a neuroscience major at Hamilton, Erin Donahue ’18 has stuck mostly to a pre-health curriculum. This summer, Donahue is participating in the Summer Research Immersion program at Binghamton University, where she is gaining exposure to the research field.

At Hamilton Minh To ’19 has devoured opportunities to further her passion for computer science. Now she is immersed in an intensive, full-stack web and mobile application development program at Horizons School of Technology.

Sara Aldrich ’19, Tatenda Chakoma ’18, Gianna Davino ’20 and Allison Mogul ’18 are studying the behavior of rats to better understand the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry behind learning, memory and motivation.

James Robbins ’16, however, knows that there’s much more to it than that. This summer as a Levitt Summer Research Fellow he is researching water fluoridation for improved public health. Working closely with Professor of Biology Herm Lehman, Robbins has been researching the public health debate about water fluoridation.
