  • Nothing could have prepared Vince Sorrentino ’20 for what it was like to work in a hospital: grumpy patients, serious wound care, and lots of bodily fluids. It was an up close and personal look at hospital work for a student on the job—one of seven Hamilton students participating in a summer program with SUNY Upstate Medical University.

  • Rather than spend the first week of spring break basking in the sun on a beach, four pre-health Hamilton students elected to shadow family medicine program residents at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica, N.Y.

  • Jed Barash ’01 has recently been recognized for his work researching amnesia as a component of the opioid epidemic. Barash and other colleagues are researching the patterns of brain damage in cases of addiction.

  • Five Hamilton juniors and seniors returned to campus early to participate in the “Week in the Life of a Resident” program from Jan. 9 to 13. St. Elizabeth Medical Center Family Medicine Program residents worked and went about their daily routine as the Hamilton students eagerly watched and learned what it’s like to work in a hospital setting.

  • This summer, Kaia Miller ’18 is working in the Silverman lab at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the Division of Infectious Disease, studying the immune responses and pathways in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). Her internship is supported by the Sandra Solomon Internship Fund, managed by the Career Center.

  • Tatenda Chakoma ’18 is exploring a possible future in neuroscience as he interns at UCLA Medical School, Department of Neurology this summer. This internship is a summer program run by Hamilton alumnus Dr. Bruce Dobkin ’69. Each year he selects one Hamilton neuroscience student to do biomedical training and research at UCLA Neurology. Chakoma’s internship is supported by the Sandra Solomon Internship Fund, managed by the Career Center.

  • Ever since he was a child, Henry Kang ’17 knew that he wanted to go into the medical field. This summer he got his first significant research experience through an internship with the Biomedical and Physical Sciences department at Michigan State University. With financial support from the Class of 1964 Internship Support Fund, Kang joined a team of researchers analyzing cells in the human immune system that can help to fight cancer.

  • Three Hamilton students, Hannah Ferris ’16, Kate Getman ’16 and Milinda Ajawara ’16 this summer participated in internships at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. Burke Hospital, celebrating its centennial this year, is an acute rehabilitation hospital that has maintained a long-standing relationship with Hamilton College, offering internships yearly to qualified applicants.
