Luke Cohen-Abeles ’23 is working as a neurodegenerative disease intern this summer at Biogen, a biotechnology company that studies neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s, and develops treatment methods.

These days, the name “Pfizer” brings to mind images of syringes and vaccine cards. But the pharmaceutical giant is concerned with far more than COVID-19 — just ask Ben Jakubczak ’23, who will be working remotely for Pfizer this summer. Jakubczak’s position will be as a research assistant, analyzing data on spontaneous blindness in Wistar Han rats in order to aid future toxicology studies.

Even if the laboratories are closed, the (online) libraries are open, and COVID-19 isn’t stopping Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chair of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology Max Majireck, Amy Glanzer ’21, and Holly Hutchinson ’21 from conducting chemistry research this summer.

Seven Hamilton students and two faculty members attended the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, Calif., on Nov. 15 to 17. The conference was an opportunity for students of color in the sciences from around the nation to see research presentations, learn about future educational and professional opportunities, and network with faculty members and professionals.

The concept of being a dentist is one thing, but AB Abera ’19 wanted a sense of the day-to-day reality of the career, so he took a summer internship at Shefferman Orthodontics in Washington, D.C.

It’s a great internship — if you love dogs and science. “You definitely would have a hard time working with the dogs if you weren't a dog lover. The kennel houses some 50 sled dogs, and at that point the dogs will love on you whether you like it or not,” says Debbie Kim '19.

Chemical physics major Clare Munroe ’18 has joined a lab at the University of Pennsylvania researching ways of predicting the severity of breast cancer in both animals and humans. Her eventual goal is to become a small animal vet. Here she describes the path she's taking.

Eric Nieminen ’16 will ride the Pan-Mass Challenge this summer. The event will fundraise for the Dana-Farber Cancer-Institute. Nieminen will be raising money specifically for the Cancer Immunology and Virology (CIV) department, where he is a research technician

Like many fellow animal lovers, pre-veterinary student Elizabeth Egey ’19 dedicated her summer to learning more about the medicine by which she is fascinated. As someone who grew up with horses, Egey, the co-captain of Hamilton’s Equestrian Team and president of the Pre-Veterinary Club, knew she wanted to explore the passion and curiosity she fostered for large animals.
