Hamilton was well-represented at the 10th annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), held this year at Northeastern University. Risper Kirui ’19, Emily DeJong ‘19, Gerard Pozzi ‘18 and KT Glusac ‘17 were among the more than 1,100 students chosen to attend the prestigious conference. In addition previous CGI U attendees Sharif Shrestha ‘17, Emily Moscowitz ‘16 and Andy Chen ’16 returned this year. All were recipients of Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center funding and/or support.

For the past six years a group of students has returned from winter break early to converge on the otherwise vacant Kirner-Johnson academic building. One group of 28 comes with the hopes of learning how to recognize, develop and practice the kinds of leadership skills that are essential to create personal and societal change. These are students participating in the Levitt Leadership Institute (LLI).

At this time of year In Central New York, planting season is little more than a fantasy — unless you are Emily Moschowits ’16, founder and executive director of Utica Greens. When the last danger of frost has passed, Moschowits and the community partners she is engaging will be ready to get their hands dirty. Utica Greens is a new nonprofit organization that aims to help provide low-income Utica residents with fresh local produce.

Andy Chen ’16 has a short-term plan and a long-term plan. He’ll spend a semester studying biotechnology at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan, then launch a cell phone-based health and education service in Kenya with Leonard Kilekwang ’16.

Tsion Tesfaye ’16 has been selected to attend the Human Ecology Lab & Island Odyssey  (HELIO program) in Japan this summer. The HELIO Program is crafted to include top change agents from around the world, selected through the Ashoka University network. Hamilton College was recognized as an Ashoka Changemaker campus in 2014.

Aleksandra Bogoevska ’17, Andy Chen ’16, Leonard Kilekwang ’16, Alexandru Hirsu ’17, Emily Moschowits ’16, Sharif Shrestha ’17 and Tsion Tesfaye ’16 were among the more than 1,200 students chosen for the prestigious conference.  All are recipients of Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center funding and/or support.

Tsion Tesfaye ’16 has been selected to present her Commitment to Action project “Youth for Ethiopia” in a skills building session at the 2016 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting that will be held April 1-3 at the University of California, Berkeley.

Sharif Shrestha ’17 is one of five students who will be recognized at the opening plenary session of the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), April 1 through 3, at the University of California, Berkeley.

Hunger is a problem in many areas of the country including in the Mohawk Valley. Assisting in addressing this community challenge are two Hamilton student organizations, The Harvest and Hamilton vs Hunger.

Although globally humans rely mostly on agriculture as a source of sustenance, farmers around the world are not on equal footing. Eren Shultz ’15 is particularly aware of this disparity “having both grown up in rural Wisconsin and spent significant amounts of time traveling and living abroad in small agrarian villages in Eastern Africa.” Shultz said he was both “fascinated and concerned” with “the differences in mechanization and lifestyles” between those communities.
