Associate Professor of Africana Studies Donald Carter presented a paper at the Africans in Europe in the Long 20th-Century: Transnationalism, Translation and Transfer conference, organized by the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, University of Liverpool, in October. His paper was titled “Blackness Over Europe: Meditations on Culture and Belonging.”

Max Currier ’10, a government major participating in Hamilton’s program in New York City, attended the 61st Annual Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA 61) at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Nov. 4-7. This year’s theme was “Advancing as a Global Community: Scarcity, Instability, and Opportunity.” About 180 undergraduates attended from across the United States.

Russell Marcus, the Chauncey Truax Post-Doctoral Fellow of Philosophy, delivered a plenary talk at the first Colombian Conference on Logic, Epistemology, and Philosophy of Science in Bogotá, Colombia. In his paper, “Explanation and Indispensability,” he examined a new explanatory indispensability argument.

The Ohio State University Press series “Theory and Interpretation of Narrative,” co-edited by Professor of Comparative Literature Peter J. Rabinowitz and James Phelan, has just published its 30th volume: Narrative Means, Lyric Ends: Temporality in the Nineteenth-Century British Long Poem by Monique Morgan.

Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, recently published an article in Journal of Chinese Teaching in the World (JCTW). The article, “Effects of Selective Attention and Noticing the Gap in CFL Acquisition of Chinese Manner Complement of ‘De’” was co-authored by Yin Zhang, ACC field director in Beijing. JCTW is a major peer-reviewed journal in the CFL field.

The week of Nov. 8 marks National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Week and the College is proud to recognize its 26 student volunteer members of Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS).

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg presented a paper titled “On the Aesthetic Reception of the Art of Chinese Calligraphy,” at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association for Asian Studies, held at Villanova University in October.

Burgess Professor of French Roberta Krueger has contributed an introductory essay, “Teach Your Children Well: Medieval Conduct Guides for Youths,” in Medieval Conduct Literature: An Anthology of Vernacular Guides to Behaviour for Youths, with English Translations (ed. Mark D. Johnston). It is published for the Medieval Academy of America by the University of Toronto Press.

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. series will screen Peter Watkins’ 1987 docudrama The Journey on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Kirner-Johnson Auditorium. The film about the possible consequences of nuclear war includes scenes filmed in Utica. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with some of those who made major contributions to the Mohawk Valley sequences of the film, including pollster John Zogby; Robert Baber, dean of Pratt Art School at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute; and Rick Werner, the John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy at Hamilton. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor of Government David Paris '71 contributed an op-ed to Inside Higher Ed (11/6/09). In “The Clock is Ticking,” Paris writes that it is only a matter of time before the Obama administration, like its predecessor, focuses intently on higher education accountability. College leaders shouldn't wait, Paris warns.
