This summer, Hamilton’s labs were busy with research across nearly all scientific disciplines — not least among them psychology. Over the past few weeks, Grace Kupka ’22, Elisa Matson ’23, Jennifer Klix ’24, and Sophie Maniscalco ’23 worked with Professor of Psychology Jennifer Borton on two projects, both related to the concept of defensive self-esteem

Amber Aparicio ’18 and Gabby Stern ’19, presented their research at the fifth annual conference of the “Social Psychologists Around Western New York.” The meeting took place at Buffalo State on May 25.

This summer, psychology majors Barbara Singhakiat ’17, Leah Pranschke ’17 and Jaclyn Zingman ’18 are conducting social psychology research under the supervision of Professor of Psychology Jennifer Borton. Their work examines reductions in working memory following ego threat in people with defensive self-esteem.

Lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” and a couple shrieks were heard in the Taylor Science Center during spring break when two groups of local third-grade students visited for some hands-on science learning with the help of Hamilton’s science faculty. For more than 20 years, Professor of Biology Dave Gapp has organized “Science Exploration Days” which bring classes of elementary school students to Hamilton for guided tours and short lessons in various areas of science.

Hamilton College Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced the promotion of three Hamilton faculty members to the rank of professor. Jennifer Borton, psychology; Sally Cockburn, mathematics; and Julio Videras, economics, were promoted effective Oct. 11.

This summer, Abby Quirk ’16, Becca Rees ’16 and Rohan Arcot ’16, under the guidance of Associate Professor of Psychology Jen Borton, are researching defensive self-esteem and its effect on autobiographical memory.

Associate Professor of Psychology Jen Borton and five students attended the annual conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in New Orleans, Jan. 17-21. The students had conducted research with Borton in 2011 or 2012 and presented posters of their work.
