Hamilton students got into the holiday spirit of giving through several campus initiatives. HAVOC sponsored its annual mitten tree where participants each volunteered to fulfill a gift request from a needy child.

Thanksgiving is just one day on the November calendar, but at Hamilton the holiday extended more than a week. Through on and off-campus events, members of the Hamilton community gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving and the extended break.

Student Assembly (SA) President Amanda Kim ’21 and Vice President Jiin Jeong ’21 led the program that focused on two topics selected by students: mental health and sustainability.

Start. Stop. Continue. On each of the circular tables were two large posters and post-it notes in three colors. Last year’s Town Hall had been an opportunity for students to voice their concerns. This year, Student Assembly (SA) decided it had to do more. On April 29, SA hosted Town Hall 2.0 – this time, not in the Chapel, but in the Annex, with two microphones set up among the tables. Each table held two posters, and each poster (labeled with one of the two main topics) was organized into three categories: start, stop, and continue.

The Chapel is filled to the brim. Students and administrators fill the two floors; two students run up and down aisles to hand students microphones, and the line that had formed outside slowly disappears as people trickle into the crevices of the room, eager to stand and watch: everyone is here to take part in Hamilton’s first Town Hall.

Last Saturday’s International Student Festival – a rousing celebration of food, culture, geography, art, and more food for hundreds of students, faculty, and staff – was followed on Sunday by a tasty sampling of offerings from restaurants owned by or employing refugees at the Refugee Food Festival.

Lizzi Tran ’18 was selected to participate in the first Obama Foundation Training Day in Boston on Nov. 18. Tran, a Posse scholar from Boston, served as Hamilton Student Assembly vice president in 2016.

Student Assembly’s Social Traditions Committee hosted a successful Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, on the Clinton Village Green. Many local families turned out for activities and entertainment sponsored by Hamilton student organizations.

As the semester winds down, students face their second major election of the year: Student Assembly (SA) president and vice president. All SA positions entail a significant time commitment, but the roles of president and vice president are arguably the most time-intensive, since the students in these roles meet regularly with important administrators and authority figures on campus.

What better internship could there be for Hamilton’s former Student Assembly president than working at the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB)? Silvia Radulescu ’17 is spending her summer at the non-partisan, independent city agency whose mission is to improve campaigns and elections in the city by reducing the potential for corruption.  Radulescu’s internship is supported by the Levitt Center.
