When Audrey Alix ’25 sits down at her desk in Utica’s City Hall, she’s greeted by the familiar sight of her class binder from Hamilton’s GIS for Geoscientists course. Occasionally, she will thumb through its pages, searching for techniques she learned on the Hill. On her computer, Alix keeps data that she created during an Emerson Grant project mapping the parks and trees of Utica. Every day, she is reminded of the work she put in to get to her current position as a city planner in Utica, N.Y.

Two faculty members and a recent graduate shared their expertise at the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year’s meeting was “Transformation & Repair: Worldmaking in Contexts of Struggle and Constraint."

“Generalized Quandle Polynomials and Their Applications to Stuquandles, Stuck Links, and RNA Folding,” co-authored by Associate Professor of Mathematics José Ceniceros, Ekaterina Bondarenko ’25, and colleagues at the University of South Florida (USF), was recently published in Open Mathematics.
