While Hamilton students are on spring break, science faculty opened their labs to welcome third graders from Myles Elementary School in New Hartford for some hands-on learning.

David Gapp, the Silas D. Childs Professor of Biology, led a conversation about Tambora: The Eruption that Changed the World as part of the Kirkland Town Library series “Hamilbrary: A Year of Reading with Hamilton College Professors.”

Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics Jesse Weiner hosted a conference titled “The Modern Prometheus; or, Frankenstein” on April 8-9. The interdisciplinary symposium explored the ways in which the literature, mythology and philosophy of Greek and Roman antiquity inform Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its later traditions.

David A. Gapp, the Silas D. Childs Professor of Biology, attended the International Conference on Volcanoes, Climate and Society April 7-10 at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Bern, Switzerland. The conference recognized the tremendous global climatic impact of the eruption of Mt. Tambora in Indonesia 200 years ago.

Lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” and a couple shrieks were heard in the Taylor Science Center during spring break when two groups of local third-grade students visited for some hands-on science learning with the help of Hamilton’s science faculty. For more than 20 years, Professor of Biology Dave Gapp has organized “Science Exploration Days” which bring classes of elementary school students to Hamilton for guided tours and short lessons in various areas of science.

Between the open curriculum, independent studies and interdisciplinary majors, Hamilton’s dedication to intellectual flexibility is evident. Although most students staying on campus are pursuing research in their field of study, Carly Poremba '15 is embracing the breadth of opportunities offered by the College. Poremba is a neuroscience and creative writing double major who is pursuing an Emerson project, “Horticultural and Historical Exploration of Botanico-Vegetable Medicine.”

Hamilton played host to a group of senior high school students from the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (VVS) Central School District on May 19. Students from the AP English and AP Biology classes spent the day working on information literacy skills to better prepare them for college.

Obesity and diabetes are serious issues that public health officials are focusing on.  A bulk of the scientific literature blames sedentary lifestyles for the increase in obesity.  However, the developing trend of people becoming categorized as obese is increasingly steep and Hamilton student researchers believe there are more biological and chemical components to the issues.
