Hamilton’s Opportunity Programs staff and students traveled to Albany, N.Y., on Feb. 2  to meet with legislative representatives as part of New York Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day.  According to CICU, organizer of the event, “…. Advocacy Day is an opportunity... to come together to show support for student aid funding and higher education.”

Maurice Isserman, the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History, discussed his forthcoming book, Continental Divide: A History of American Mountaineering (W.W. Norton & Co, 2016), on Feb. 5 at the University of California Santa Barbara.

The spring F.I.L.M. (Forum on Image and Language in Motion) series continues on Sunday, Feb. 7, with Portrait of Jason (1967), directed by Shirley Clarke and starring Jason Holliday (née Aaron Payne).

Members of the Hamilton community gathered to hear Dr. Michael Dorsey’s lecture, “Pathways Beyond Paris: Toward Energy & Climate Justice” on Feb. 4. Dorsey is the interim director for the Joint Center of Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.

The men’s soccer team team initiated a community service project over the past few months, collecting sweatshirts/sweaters and hoodies to be donated to the Rome Rescue Mission. The team collected more than 150 articles of clothing and will be dropping them off in Rome next week.

A paper co-authored by Assistant Professor of Biology Cynthia Downs was recently published by The American Naturalist. “Speeding up growth: selection for mass-independent maximal metabolic rate alters growth rates” describes the results of the authors’ study of the relationship of metabolic rates to pace-of-life.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents the 2016 choir musical, Sondheim on Sondheim, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

Human rights activist John Dau, a former “Lost Boy of Sudan,” spoke on Feb. 3 about his life experiences and his successful career in the United States. The talk was presented by the Levitt Center Speaker Series.

Just days after arriving on campus after the winter break, members of Hamilton Microfinance (HMF) met with Tom Owens, CEO and president of ACCESS Federal Credit Union, to evaluate the club’s first loan application of 2016. After reviewing the application, the group voted unanimously to provide a $2,500 loan to Rudy (for Rudy's privacy, the club is not disclosing his last name), who plans to use the funds to buy machinery for his farm.

Professor of Africana Studies Donald Carter presented a paper at a symposium on “African Clandestine Migrants and Fortress Europe: Dreams of a Better Future and Human Dramas in the Mediterranean Sea.” The event was held Jan. 22-23 at the University of Florida Center for African Studies (CAS).
