A recent editorial published in the Utica Observer-Dispatch discussed the efforts of Young Han ’06 to register to vote with the Oneida County Board of Elections. According to the editorial, "Discouraging anyone from voting is the antithesis of democracy. To have the board of elections be the ones doing the discouraging is ludicrous."

The artwork of John von Bergen '63, which was on display at Stone Quarry Hill Park in Cazenovia, was reviewed in this article. Von Bergen's work is described as "lyrical" with "elegant plays of line, which seem to course through thin air creating shape and form, toying with mass and void." The exhibition displayed pieces, mostly bronze sculptures, representing 36 years of von Bergen's art.

Matthew Zeller, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded the Boren Graduate Fellowship through the National Security Education Program. Zeller will pursue a joint master’s degree in public affairs and international relations at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.

Members of the College Democrats and the College Republicans, as well as two independent students, participated in a public debate on current political issues on April 28. The topics discussed by the panelists included the war in Iraq, the war on terror, affirmative action, taxes and the economy, education and healthcare.

The Globalization Sophomore Seminar will host a Symposium on Globalization on Sunday, May 2, from 1-4 p.m. in the Red Pit at KJ. Ahmet E. Tonak, professor of economics at Simon's Rock College of Bard, will serve as moderator. Other participants will include Northeastern University Economics Professor Shahid Alam, speaking on "Polarization in the Global Economy: Since 1800"; Hamilton College Professor of Economics Erol Balkan on "Globalization and Hot Money"; Paul Cooney, Queens College (CUNY) professor of economics on "Neoliberal Globalization and Crisis in Latin America"; Duke University Professor of Economics Rajani Kanth on "Globalization and its Limits"; and Stephanie Luce, professor of economics, University of Massachusetts - Amherst, on "Fighting Over Jobs? A Look at Global Outsourcing."

Professor of Music Samuel Pellman received the Audience Choice Award in the "Outside the Bachs" choral anthem competition held April 23-25 at the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. Pellman's composition, "In the Stillness," for chorus and piano, was selected from the five finalists in the international competition who were invited to Ft. Worth to hear their music premiered by the 80-voice Choral Union. As a result of this award, Pellman has also been commissioned to write a new work for the ensemble and will return to Ft. Worth for its premiere in the Spring of 2006 at First United Methodist, one of the largest Methodist churches in the United States.

Professor of Philosophy Celeste Friend led a brown bag lunch discussion on the question “Does altruism exist?” on April 28. Friend discussed the traditional theory of psychological egoism and its limitations, and then explained her reasons for believing that altruism can exist. Students then furthered the discussion with questions and comments. The event was sponsored by the Hamilton Action Volunteer Outreach Coalition (HAVOC).

Young Han '06 was the subject of a recent Associated Press article titled "Student Could Run for Office at Home but Can't Vote." Han claims he has tried to register with the County Board of Elections three times since last October but was told that he should fill out an absentee ballot for his home state.

David A. Greene '85 has been named vice president for campus life and student services at Brown University. Greene, who has been serving as interim vice president for the current academic year, was formerly assistant to Brown president Ruth Simmons. His appointment is effective July 1, 2004.
