Professor of Religious Studies Heidi M. Ravven recently gave three talks and book-signings for her book The Self Beyond Itself: An Alternative History of Ethics, the New Brain Sciences, and the Myth of Free Will (The New Press, 2013).
On Sept. 10, Ravven spoke at Barnes & Noble in Dewitt, N.Y. A week later she gave a talk as part of a lecture series at the Cazenovia (N.Y.) Public Library. On Sept. 18, she appeared at Buffalo Street Books, an independent and cooperative bookstore in Ithaca, N.Y. Her talk was part of an ongoing series sponsored by the bookstore.
In addition, on Sept. 11, a review of The Self Beyond Itself appeared in the Ithaca Times (Ithaca, N.Y.). Reviewer Arthur Whitman wrote, “Ravven joins a growing band of thinkers developing conceptions of the human self that acknowledge its neural and biological basis without limiting its boundaries to the human skull.”
