With nine years of experience in the field of speech-language pathology, Anne Rienhoff Coady ’99 recently launched her own company with hopes of achieving more personal satisfaction. When asked about her expectations for the new company, she replied simply, “My ultimate goal is to help a lot of children.” However, pursuing a career in speech-language pathology was not always her intended path.

As a transfer from the pre-med program at the University of Virginia, Coady found the wide-open curriculum at Hamilton liberating. “I was able to take a lot of different courses; each of which contributed to the most important skill I learned at Hamilton, the ability to think critically.”  Still, after graduating with a degree in history it took Coady over a year of working at jobs in different fields to begin her career in speech pathology.

Having grown up with a stutter herself, Coady was eager to help children with similar difficulties. While working towards this objective, she realized the need for quality computer software  to aid in the teaching of speech-language skills to children. Coady quickly recognized the vital role such software could play in a child’s development and set out to develop some of her own. “The critical thinking skills I learned while at Hamilton allowed me to weed through research and derive a product that is based on the latest evidence.” The final products, interactive computer software that help children develop speech-language skills, are the first step in achieving Coady’s ultimate goal for the company.
