Meredith Harper Bonham, executive assistant to the president and secretary to the Board of Trustees, has been selected as an Accent on Excellence winner by the Utica Observer-Dispatch and Northland Communications. The annual award, sponsored by the two organizations, recognizes the significant contributions that 10 individuals, all younger than 40, have made to the community. The winners will be recognized at an awards luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 16, at noon, at Daniele's Banquet Specialists, Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford.

An article about the winners in the Observer-Dispatch (8/4/08) notes, "The 10 people selected have not only excelled in their own careers, but also have volunteered their time with numerous local community groups and projects."  Those recognized were chosen from among 75 nominees.

Bonham received her bachelor's degree from Kenyon College, a master's degree in education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in higher education at Syracuse University's School of Education.

She came to Hamilton as assistant dean of admission in 1993 and worked in that office through 1997. After pursuing graduate work at Harvard, Bonham returned to Hamilton in 1998, joining the Office of Communications and Development as associate director of annual giving. In 1999 she was named assistant to the president, and Bonham was promoted to her current position of executive assistant to the president and secretary to the board of trustees in 2001.

An active member of the community, Bonham serves as board member and chair of the Development Committee for the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley and a board member for A Better Chance of Clinton. She represents the College at monthly village of Clinton board meetings, and is responsible for promoting and coordinating Hamilton's Community Outreach Campaign (to encourage giving to the local community as an alternative to the United Way). She also participates in various service days sponsored by the College.

Bonham has also been involved as a board member and chair of the Contributed Support Committee for Sculpture Space, vice president of the board of New Horizons of the Mohawk Valley, and the Membership Council for Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute.

Observer-Dispatch president and publisher Donna Donovan commended the winners in the newspaper article. "It's just incredible to see the range, and not only in the nominees but in the nominations that we receive," she said. "That just tells us there is a tremendous community commitment among young adults in the Mohawk Valley."

Accent on Excellence was founded in 2000 by the Observer-Dispatch and Northland Communications with an initial goal of encouraging young people to stay in the Mohawk Valley and share their talents.
