Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government, participated in a live interview on the BBC's "The World Today" program on February 14. Li discussed the Chinese government's control over media and the growing demand for freedom of the press in the country.
In January, Li appeared on Foreign Exchange hosted by Newsweek columnist Fareed Zakaria which was aired nationally by PBS. The segment in which Li participated was titled "Reverse Brain Drain." He was interviewed with David Heenan, author of Flight Capita: the Alarming Exodus of America's Best and Brightest. He was interviewed with Stephen Roach, the chief economist and director of global economic analysis at Morgan Stanley, and James Dorn, China specialist and vice president for academic affairs at the Cato Institute. Li discussed the U.S. administration's policy toward China and its pressure on China to be more sensitive toward the major world challenges including nuclear weapons, environmental threats, energy use, intellectual property rights, regional stability and anti-terrorism cooperation. He addressed the challenges faced by each nation in understanding the strategic thinking of the other. The Beijing Review is China's only English weekly news magazine.
