Love graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical School in 1974. She did her surgical residency at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and became chief resident in 1979. In 1980 she opened a private practice in general surgery and was the first woman surgeon on the staff of Beth Israel Hospital. In 1982 she joined the staff of the Dana Farber Breast Evaluation Clinic, the first comprehensive multidisciplinary center for breast care. In 1988 in the private sector she founded the Faulkner Breast Center in Boston. This was the first facility in the country to include a multidisciplinary, all woman staff, consisting of surgeons, nurses, a radiation therapist and medical oncologist. This program has received national recognition and continues to this day, combining patient care with a research program and fellowship in breast surgery.

In 1992 Dr. Love moved to Los Angeles to bring this multidisciplinary approach to UCLA's new Breast Center. She left the directorship of the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center in 1996 and is currently an adjunct professor of surgery at UCLA and director of the Santa Barbara Breast Cancer Institute. She was a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Women's Health Initiative, helping to guide the largest study ever on postmenopausal women in this country.

She first published Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book in 1990; a second edition was published in 1995. Another book, Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book, was published in 1997, challenging the standard practice of prescribing hormones during menopause. Love has also written numerous research articles on breast cancer and its treatment. She is no longer seeing patients but is devoting her time to research and writing.
