The next lecture in the Faculty Lecture Series will feature Julie Dunsmore, assistant professor of psychology, talking about "Parents' discussions with their children about the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001" on Friday, May 3 at 4:10 p.m. in the Red Pit, KJ. Reception will follow at Cafe Opus.

Dunsmore describes her topic as follows: "The terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 was a traumatic event of national proportions.  Parents of school-age children not only had to deal with their own emotional reactions to the attack, but also had to find some way to discuss the event with their children; there was simply no way to keep their children unaware of the event and its impact on the adults in their lives.  Like many parents, I was vitally interested in how best to talk about the attack with my school-age child.  As an emotion researcher, I focused on how parents' emotional communications with their children about the terrorist attack influenced children's emotional reactions to and ways of coping with it."
