Trevor Field, the founder of National Government Organization (NGO) PlayPumps International from South Africa, will speak on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel.
PlayPumps International is an NGO registered in South Africa that helps improve the lives of children and their families by providing easy access to clean drinking water, enhancing public health, and offering play equipment across Africa. The PlayPump systems are sustainable, patented water pumps powered by children at play. Installed near schools, the PlayPump system doubles as a water pump and a merry-go-round for children.
PlayPumps International plans to fulfill its mission of providing African schools and communities with sustainable, clean drinking water by installing 4,000 PlayPump® water systems in 10 nations in sub-Saharan Africa by 2010.
The lecture is sponsored by Hamilton's Action Outreach Volunteer Committee (HAVOC) in conjunction with a consortium of upstate New York colleges including Hobart-William Smith, Colgate University and Ithaca College.
Later this month HAVOC in conjunction Students for International Public Health Awareness and the West Indian and African Association will host a fundraiser at the Little Pub on Friday, April 25, from 7 -8:30 p.m. They're hoping to raise enough money following Mr. Field's talk to purchase one PlayPump. The entire Hamilton community is invited to the reception which will include cash bar, cheeses, fruits and desserts.
