The Hamilton Action Volunteer Outreach Coalition (HAVOC) is sponsoring several activities to draw attention to hunger.

OxfamOn Thursday, November 19, Hamilton students can sign off any or all of their college meal plan meals for Thursday, Nov. 19. In return the money will be donated to Oxfam, (a non-profit organization that fights worldwide hunger and poverty). In recent years Hamilton has consistently been one of the top college/university record holders for Oxfam donations in the country.

Hunger BanquetThe global reality of food distribution and shortages will be demonstrated on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Hamilton as HAVOC sponsors a Hunger Banquet at Bundy Dining Hall, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The dinner will resemble the global reality of food distribution. By random drawing, guests will end up in one of three groups, proportional to the earnings of people in high, middle and low income countries.

Approximately 20 percent of attendees will eat a good, well-balanced meal while seated at tables with tablecloths; another 30 percent will eat a menu of rice and beans at tables; the remainder sit on the floor and eat from a shared bowl of rice to illustrate the large percentage of the world population who has little or no food. Guest speaker Matt Miller from the Rome Rescue Mission will discuss the realities of hunger and homelessness.

Food DriveHAVOC representatives will collect non-perishable food items at campus dorms.

HAVOC is a student-run organization providing community service for Oneida County since 1988.
