Hamilton College has created a community group on LinkedIn, a professional networking site with 15 million members that is built on social-networking concepts and principles. This group is open to all students, alumni, parents of current and former students and current and former faculty and staff. It has been established to provide Hamilton members with a simple yet powerful means to connect and network with each other and share their wider professional connections with a Hamilton audience. The more individuals who join the group, the more robust it will be.
Many members of the Hamilton community have already joined this highly effective business and career networking site enabling them to establish connections with colleagues and associates from current and previous endeavors. With the launch of the Hamilton group, quite a few have already taken a second easy step and have joined this new community group.
To participate, you must first join LinkedIn and then join the Hamilton group. The process is simple. Interested participants should go to www.hamilton.edu/LinkedIn to join both LinkedIn, for those who aren't members, and the Hamilton group by following a few straightforward prompts. Questions about signing up or joining may be sent to jdross@hamilton.edu.
LinkedIn is led by CEO and Hamilton alumnus Dan Nye '88. When asked during a recent Newsweek interview, "Do you recommend that LinkedIn users accept as a connection anyone who asks, to build up their network?," he responded "Absolutely not. You should only connect with people who you know and might have a reason to help. In my LinkedIn profile I have a message at the bottom that says, 'Please don't reach out to connect to me unless we went to school together or worked together so that I can serve as a reference or recommend you to somebody.' But I'll always accept someone who's a Hamilton College [my alma mater] grad."
