The Hamilton College Performing Arts continues its Contemporary Voices and Visions series with a performance and residency by the Steve Wilson Jazz Quartet. The performance will be Saturday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. in Wellin Hall on the Hamilton College campus, and residency activities will take place on Friday, Oct. 25. The Hamilton College Jazz Ensemble will perform one selection with the Steve Wilson Quartet.

The versatile talents of Steve Wilson have made him one of the most in-demand sidemen on soprano and alto saxophones, both in the studio and on the bandstand. These experiences have helped him garner the enviable position of being a regular band member of groups led by established veterans, as well as emerging artists, including Dave Holland, Chick Corea, Buster Williams, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Dianne Reeves, and Bruce Barth. In fact, Wilson was the subject of a feature article in the New York Times, "A Sideman's Life" in September 1996.

As leader, Wilson has released six recordings and has been labeled, "an artist of considerable accomplishment and promise," by the Chicago Tribune. Talented as a composer, saxophonist and flutist, Wilson has established himself as an eclectic songwriter with original material that reflects the legacy of jazz legends as well as explores straight-ahead swing jazz and delves into strains of R&B, Afro-Cuban, and Latin music. Performing with Wilson at Hamilton College will be Bruce Barth, Ed Howard, and Adam Cruz.

In addition to a public performance on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m., Wilson and his band will be offering several clinics free of charge for local jazz musicians. On Friday, Oct. 25, from 3:30 –5 p.m. band members will hold clinics for saxophone and flute, drums, piano, and bass. All clinics will be held in the Schambach Center for Performing Arts. After the individual instrument clinics, there will be an open discussion about jazz, the music industry and careers in music from 5:30-7 p.m. in Café Opus. The open discussion is also free and open to the public.
