Five Hamilton students, Jenna Lally, Julianne Jaquith, Jonathan Zellner, Hannah Case, and Steven Beale, participated in a conference at the United States Military Academy, April 25-27, along with delegations from the four U.S. service academies. Hamilton was the only civilian college invited.
Conference presentations were made by key figures in the legal discussion about the war on terror including Marine Col. Dwight Sullivan, chief defense counsel in the Office of Military Commissions; Judge Francis Gilligan, prosecutor in the Office of Military Commissions; and Col. Richard Pregent of the Army's Intelligence and Security Command, a specialist on cyber-warfare. West Point Adjunct Professor of Law Gary Solis conducted a seminar discussion with student participants on torture and the law of armed conflict. Hamilton Professor Frank Anechiarico conducted a seminar on the evolution of presidential power before and after September 11, 2001.
Hamilton alumnus, Sean Thorsen, '05, also participated. The Hamilton delegation was cited by organizers of the event and officials of the Academy as a critical part of the conference, noteworthy for its contributions to all phases of the conference. The United States Military Academy Law of Armed Conflict Center sponsored the event.
