Not all summer camps are about learning scissor kicks, tackles or goal tending. For elementary and middle school students who want to have a different summer camp experience, Hamilton College is offering a Public Speaking Camp, June 25-29.
The brainchild of Visiting Professor of Communication John Adams, the camp aims to help students ages 10-13 "develop their public speaking effectiveness and learn about the history of rhetoric – one of the foundational liberal arts."
"I'm doing it for two basic reasons--it is fun and public speaking is important," Adams explains. "Think of any leadership position--can you imagine it not including public speaking? In most organizations, leadership is entwined with public speech -- if you aspire to be a leader, you should aspire to be an effective public speaker."
At the camp students will receive instruction in public speaking and will give five speeches that are recorded on DVD. The camp runs from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day and the cost is $210, which includes camp, lunch, a DVD and at tee-shirt.
For more information about the camp, contact professor John Adams at (315) 859-4838, e-mail jadams@hamilton.edu.
