Hamilton College President Eugene M. Tobin has announced the community members who will join him and two college trustees on a committee that will make gifts and grants to organizations serving the Village of Clinton and the Town of Kirkland.

The awards will be made from a new endowed fund, The Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund, established at the college by anonymous donors.  To date, the fund totals more than $200,000.  Since spendable income from the endowment is calculated to be 5 percent of the fund's total value, approximately $10,000 will be disbursed when the first gifts are made, probably in the fall.

Joining Tobin on the committee from the college will be Jeff Little and Jack Withiam, trustees and 1971 Hamilton graduates; and Karen Green, assistant dean of students and director of multicultural affairs.  Members of the community who have agreed to serve include: Annette Foley, Kirkland Town supervisor; James Torrance, Clinton Central School superintendent; John Nester, Clinton fire chief; Andrew Burns, president of Strategic Investment Advisors and a 1978 Hamilton graduate; and John Fehlner, owner of The Cleaners and the Clinton Cider Mill.

Tobin will chair the Hamilton College Town-Gown Committee.  The committee, which met recently to outline the process by which it will make its inaugural gifts, has chosen to direct grants in the first year primarily to educational and public safety organizations.  In planning for future disbursements, however, the committee will be seeking information about civic and cultural organizations' plans for special projects.

Tobin said Hamilton intends to grow the fund to $1 million over the next five years and will solicit donations from college alumni and friends and from members of the local community.

Questions about the Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund should be directed to Mike Debraggio, director of communications at the college.
