More than 1,900 students and their families will congregate on the Hill on Nov. 9-11 for Hamilton's annual Family Weekend. The weekend will include something for everyone, from athletic contests and concerts to a book discussion and educational family colleges.
Among Friday's highlights are a reading and discussion of Orpheus Lost with author Janette Turner Hospital, the Carolina Distinguished Professor of English at the University of South Carolina; an Athletics Open House with Hamilton's new athletic director Jon Hind '80 and coaches; and a Summer Research Poster session. More than 100 Hamilton students conducted research during the summer, supported by the Science Department, Levitt Center and Emerson Foundation. The student-researchers will present posters of their work on topics ranging from sustainable energy and the speeches of Abraham Lincoln to optimal foreign reserves and toxins in turtles, in the Science Center Atrium.
Saturday's events will begin with a State of the College address by Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart at 10 a.m. in Wellin Hall. Following that, Family Weekend attendees can have their fill of athletic contests: women's soccer hosts Moravian College in the first round of the NCAA Championship at 11 a.m. at Love Field; football will play Bates at noon; and men's rugby meets William Paterson University in a regional championship/national qualifying game at 1 p.m. on Minor Field.
For those who wish to dabble in the academic, Professor of Government Theodore Eismeier and students in his American Political Process class will discuss campaign strategies for the 2008 presidential election in a Family College at 1:30 p.m. Another Family College, Learning About Art with Mr. Root, will feature William Salzillo and Susanna White, curators of the Emerson Gallery exhibit "The Best Kind of Life": Edward W. Root, Class of 1905, as Teacher, Collector and Naturalist," at 3 p.m. Prize-winning student writers will share their poems and short stories in readings at another Family College, at 4 p.m. in the Science Atrium.
The performing arts also will offer a full slate of options for the weekend. Hamilton dance students will perform a piece titled "Wind Over Wood," while the Hamilton College Choir and College Hill Singers will present the musical portion of the program on Friday evening and again on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening offerings include comedy with Megan Mooney, a theater production of Etta Jenks and Hamilton College Orchestra and jazz concerts.
