"Ethical Considerations of Human Cloning"
(A Panel Discussion for Members of the Hamilton Community)

Wednesday, February 21, 2001
8 p.m.
Fillius Events Barn

Efforts to clone a human being have received national and international attention in recent weeks.  As this technology advances, we are confronted with a range of ethical issues.  To help us further consider these issues, four members of the Hamilton faculty have agreed to serve as panelists for an open community forum on this topic.

Panelists
Tim Elgren, Associate Dean of the Faculty, Moderator

•  Herm Lehman, Assistant Professor of Biology — A cell biologist, Prof. Lehman will provide an introduction to cloning mammals.

•  Brigitte Boisselier, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry — As director of research for Clonaid, Prof. Boisselier will discuss recent progress toward cloning a human.

•  Jinnie Garrett, Professor of Biology — A molecular geneticist, Prof. Garrett will argue against human cloning from an ethical point of view.

•  Rick Werner, John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy — An ethicist, Prof. Werner will take the position that regulated cloning is morally defensible.

An open discussion will follow comments from the panel.
