Despite the threat of rain and thunderstorms, the inaugural College Hill Golf Tournament got off to a great start. On Friday, August 3, the Great River Golf Club in Milford, CT played host to over 36 alumni, students and friends of the College, who together raised over $1,000 for the 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary '03 Scholarship (more information below).

The mid-summer heat was tempered by a light breeze off the Housatonic River as golfers wound their way around the par 72 track, which is ranked one of the top semi-private golf courses in the northeast. Contests were held for the longest drive (Hole #4) and closest to the pin (Hole #11), as well as first and second place, determined by the lowest gross scores. Pat Cleary '68, Michael's father, took home the longest drive and current junior and golf team member, David Christie '09, stuck his shot 1-foot from the pin on the picturesque 11th hole. They each received gift certificates to the Great River pro-shop.

There was stiff competition for the lowest gross score, but two teams emerged to the claim the top prizes. The team of Jack Withiam '71, Jeff Little '71, Steve Small '73 and John Young '71 came in second with a team score of 65, while Professor Bob Simon, Marc Simon '94 and Jim Gillies '97 took home the gold with a stunning 10-under 62. The awards were presented by the Marjorie and Robert W. McEwen Professor of Philosophy Bob Simon at the after-tournament reception.

The event was organized by two lead volunteers from the New York City Alumni Association, Michael Pellman '02 and Maurice Michaane '03, who are already at work planning the second annual tournament. Registration for next year's tournament will be capped at 75 attendees, with preference given to those who participated this year. Be sure to stay tuned for more information!
