"In the past five years, we have filled the equivalent of 40 percent of the graves in the American cemetery at Omaha Beach. Some of our political leaders say they would be willing to have us fight on in Iraq 100 years … To what end?" wrote Maurice Isserman, James L. Ferguson Professor of History, in an opinion piece in the  Observer-Dispatch on March 16. The op-ed, "5 years, 4,000 American graves and no end in sight," wove Isserman's observations in 2003 as he led two dozen students in his "History of World War II" class through the Normandy region of France with the simultaneous start of the Iraq War.

A side column to the opinion piece provided details about the Mohawk Valley Peace Coalition's planned gathering to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war at Westminister Presbyterian Church in downtown Utica on Wednesday, March 19, at 5 p.m.
