Jennifer Potter Hayes K '73 has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to the U.S.-Korea International Education Administrators program. Hayes is currently employed as a program developer and career advisor at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, where she works with graduate international students. She was formerly Director of Alumni Programs at Hamilton College and prior to that, Registrar.

Hayes will visit Korea in June for approximately one month. This Fulbright program is designed for international education administrators to provide a cultural immersion, introducing participants to the education systems, curricula, education policy, and society of Korea, especially as they relate to international student exchange. The first half of the program is scheduled in Seoul, the remainder touring other parts of the country.

Hayes will visit campuses of a variety of higher education institutions,
meet with government officials who are involved in education, consult with Korea's international education professionals and senior administrators. She will have a chance to meet with the students, faculty and administrators at institutions where Maxwell has long-standing partnerships. "It will be wonderful to visit our students' home institutions and talk with many of our alumni who have returned to Korea after earning their degrees," Hayes said.

South Korea sends the largest number for foreign students to U.S. universities (13.5% of all foreign students) according to the Department of Homeland Security. India is second with 12.1%, China third with 9.3% and Japan fourth with 8.6%.

In her project statement Hayes explained "Student advising comprises about 50 percent of my work during the academic year as I met individually with students to discuss their education as it relates to career goals and aspirations, course options and job search strategies. Advising international students whose countries I had visited is so much more credible and useful to the student than it can be with students from regions where I have no first-hand knowledge." She added, "The more we know about the educational systems and cultures from which our students come, the more effective we can be."

The principal purpose of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of the more than 150 countries that participate in the program.
